Can a Thermal Printer Print in Colour?

Most labels printed on direct thermal printers (which do not use an ink ribbon) appear in black. This is because the label material has a special heat-sensitive coating that turns black when heated by the thermal printhead.

That said, there are speciality labels with coated areas that produce colours other than black. These labels can print certain sections in different colours, but it is important to note that full-colour images cannot be printed this way.

Some thermal labels can even print in two colours, typically red and black. These labels work by applying different temperatures to specific areas, with the heat determining whether the printed output appears in red or black. However, printers capable of using this dual-colour material are very rare.

For thermal transfer printers that use ink ribbons, you can print in colour by installing a coloured ribbon. The printed colour will match the ribbon, but again, full-colour images are not possible.

In short, you cannot print full-colour images onto blank labels using standard direct thermal or thermal transfer printers. Your options for full-colour labels are:

  1. Inkjet label printers – These allow you to print entire labels in any colour you need. The downside is a higher upfront cost and higher ongoing consumable costs.

  2. Pre-printed labels – You can have your labels professionally printed with your logo, branding, or any other colour elements. Then, variable information like addresses, part numbers, or ingredient lists can be printed in black using your standard thermal printer.

For many businesses, pre-printed labels are the most cost-effective solution. They allow you to continue using existing thermal printers while keeping label costs lower than inkjet-compatible alternatives.
