The paper thermal transfer labels in this category have been selected for use with iDPRT iF4 and iT4 label printers when operating in thermal transfer mode.

Compatible rolls have a maximum outside diameter of 127mm (5"). The maximum media width for this category is 118mm.

The iF4 accepts labels on 12.5mm and 25mm cores. The iT4 also accepts labels on 38mm cores.

What Are Paper Thermal Transfer Labels?

Paper thermal transfer labels are printed using a thermal transfer ribbon. Heat from the printer’s printhead transfers ink from the ribbon onto the label surface, creating clear text, graphics, barcodes and QR codes.

Unlike direct thermal labels, thermal transfer paper does not have a heat-sensitive surface and cannot be printed correctly without a ribbon.

Thermal transfer printing generally produces a more durable and longer-lasting image than direct thermal printing. Paper thermal transfer labels provide an economical choice when durable printing is required but the additional resistance of a synthetic label is unnecessary.

The overall media width includes both the label and its backing paper. Because the backing paper is normally slightly wider than the label itself, customers should check the complete media width rather than measuring only the label.

Choosing a Thermal Transfer Ribbon

A compatible thermal transfer ribbon must be installed when printing these labels.

Wax ribbons are commonly used with standard paper labels and provide reliable print quality for general barcode, product, retail and warehouse applications.

Wax-resin ribbons may be more suitable for coated paper labels or applications requiring improved resistance to rubbing, moisture and frequent handling.

The ribbon should be compatible with the label surface and slightly wider than the label. This helps ensure complete print coverage and protects the printhead from contact with the backing paper.

Choosing the Correct Core Size

Labels on 12.5mm and 25mm cores can be selected for both the iF4 and iT4, provided the remaining roll dimensions are compatible.

Labels on 38mm cores should only be selected for compatible iT4 models. The iF4’s standard media specification does not include a 38mm label core.
